Skhidnytsia is a resort settlement in Drohobych district, Lviv region, in the valley of the Skhidnychanka river at 520–650 metres. In the late 19th century it produced more oil than anywhere else in Galicia, and old oil pits and pumps still recall that era. Local researcher Omelian Stotskyi found the Naftusya-type mineral waters between 1956 and 1973, and Skhidnytsia became a resort in 1976.

The deposit counts 38 springs and 17 wells, and some of them are open to visitors. The forests of the Skole Beskids surround the village, and a trail leads from here to Skole. Drinking cures run all year, and May to October suits hiking.

Skhidnytsia, a Naftusya spa in the Carpathian forests

Skhidnytsia is a resort settlement in Drohobych district, Lviv region, set in a mountain valley among the forested slopes of the Carpathians. It is known for mineral waters of many kinds, Naftusya the most famous among them; Truskavets and Drohobych are close by. Oil was once extracted here, and old oil pits and pumps still recall that era. Today people come for drinking cures, spa time and quiet forest walks.

When to go

Drinking cures and treatments run all year, so Skhidnytsia has no real off-season. May to October is best for forest trails and hikes, while summer and early autumn bring mushrooms and berries. Winter is quiet, with evenings in the spa and pools. Rooms go fast over Christmas, New Year and long weekends, so book ahead.

How to get there

The nearest railway stations are in Truskavets and Drohobych, served by Ukrzaliznytsia trains, including from Lviv. From there, continue to Skhidnytsia by bus or taxi. Driving from Lviv is easy too: the road runs through Drohobych and Boryslav.

A Hotel by Apartel is a modern hotel in the forest near the mineral springs, designed for wellness and peaceful breaks. Its own pump room serves water from several springs, Naftusya among them. The hotel has a spa area with a sauna and salt room, swimming pools and a gym, and offers physician consultations, massage and speleotherapy. Bistro Local Food & Wine serves buffets by day and an à la carte menu in the evening; children have a playground and a kids’ room, and there is a conference room for small groups.

What to see nearby

In Skhidnytsia itself, walk to the old oil pits and the springs, then head out on forest trails into the Skole Beskids. Nearby are the spa town of Truskavets, Drohobych with its wooden Church of St George, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the Tustan rock fortress in Urych, one of the best-known landmarks of the Lviv region.

Travel tips

Skhidnytsia's springs differ in composition, so agree on a drinking course with a doctor: resort hotels usually offer a medical consultation on site. Pump rooms and springs are spread around the village, so check which ones are closest to your hotel before you go. Bring comfortable shoes and a raincoat for forest walks, as the weather in the mountains changes quickly. If you plan trips to Drohobych, Truskavets or Tustan, a car or an arranged transfer makes them easier.
