Ivano-Frankivsk, a relaxed city at the foot of the Carpathians
Ivano-Frankivsk is the regional capital of Prykarpattia, founded in the 17th century as the fortress of Stanisławów. Parts of the old walls and the restored Bastion survive, and the compact centre around Market Square and the City Hall is easy to explore on foot. People love it for its Galician architecture, cafés, creative spirit and closeness to the mountains.
When to go
May, June and September are the best months for city walks, warm but not too hot. In summer café terraces fill the centre, and evenings are pleasant by the city lake in Taras Shevchenko Park. In winter Frankivsk makes a handy stop before the ski resorts, and at Christmas the city fills with carol singers, nativity plays and festive markets.
How to get there
Ukrzaliznytsia trains run here from Kyiv, Lviv and many other cities, and the railway station is close to the centre. Buses link the city with other regional centres and the towns of Prykarpattia, and by car it is an easy drive from Lviv, Ternopil or Chernivtsi. From Frankivsk, suburban trains and buses head to Yaremche, Vorokhta and Bukovel, making the city a natural gateway to the Carpathians.
Where to stay
Grand Hotel Roxolana occupies a historic building in the heart of the city, on a quiet street near the railway station, a few minutes’ walk from Market Square. Rooms range from singles and doubles to junior suites, suites and the Executive Suite. The hotel has a European restaurant specialising in fresh meat and seafood, a spa area with a sauna and a heated indoor pool, a massage room, a fitness centre and a 24-hour concierge. The hotel page shows whether you can book for your dates.
The city page also lists hotels at the Carpathian resorts beyond Frankivsk. In Bukovel, Glacier Premium Apartments is an aparthotel on the shore of Lake Molodosti with panoramic spas, pools, underground parking and a ski room. In Polianytsia, next to Bukovel, you will find Eterna Hotel & Spa, F&B Spa Resort and Karpatski Hotel, the Fomich Estates and MK Resort complexes, the two-storey chalets with panoramic windows at Chalet Fomich, the dome cabins of Fomich Glamping and the Buko Village cottages. For more options, see hotels in Bukovel and hotels in Polianytsia.
What to see
Start at Market Square and the City Hall, then walk to the Cathedral of the Resurrection and the former Collegiate Church, now an art museum. Nearby are the Armenian church, the Potocki Palace and the Bastion, and the pedestrian stretch of Nezalezhnosti Street is lined with cafés and shops. Outside the city, visit the Manyava Skete in the Carpathian foothills, ancient Halych on the Dniester and Yaremche with the Probiy waterfall.
Travel tips
The centre of Ivano-Frankivsk is small, and most sights are a few minutes' walk from one another, so you won't need a car for sightseeing. If you're heading to the Carpathians, the city makes a handy base for the first or last night of the trip: trains and buses to the mountains leave from the station. Around Christmas, New Year and the peak of the ski season, rooms near the station and the centre go faster, so book early.
